SJSU ME 195a Full Scale Controls Team Individual Blog - Week of 9/12

The team is finally making meaningful strides on our project. We revised our project proposal and were able to nail down our goals for the year, which were accepted by Dan Espinosa and Professor Furman. After our meeting with Dan, we were able to take apart the controls system on the full-scale bogie and see exactly what last year's control team created. The system as a whole was messy and poorly constructed, so the group decided that another main goal was to make the control system aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. The group also got a confidence boost as the motor team decided that we would have 4 hub motors on the full-scale bogie, and that they would be sizing and building it. Originally, our team was going to be sizing the motor, but since we do not have to complete this task anymore, we are able to have more time in the beginning of the project testing on hub motors from Ron and make more progress on programming and wiring before the second semester of our project. We will continue discussing what products we are going to need for the controls system, and we will be preparing our first presentation for next week.

Alex Krause SJSU ME 195b Full Scale Controls Team Individual Blog - Week of 5/1 This past week, our team was finally able to make a lot of working components come together into a working system. With the wireless communication working, we were able to move onto figuring out how to controls the motors remotely. I started working with a simple 12-bit DAC so that the Arduino could send a solid analog signal into the throttle control of the motor controller. I was able to make it output a specific voltage, and then i was able to combine it with the wireless transceiver to control the speed of the bogie wirelessly by turning a potentiometer. With that working, all of the components of our controls system were working, so this last week will be focused on putting stuff together in an organized manner, cleaning wiring up, and working on the main program for the system.

Alex Krause SJSU ME 195b Full Scale Controls Team Individual Blog - Week of 4/17 This past week, the team continued to work on making the individual electrical components work before we combine them all together into our system. Justin was able to make the motor work completely forwards and backwards. Alan and I have been working on making the linear actuator work with an H-Bridge and relay but we are having trouble making the circuit work. Danny is coming in this week and we will hopefully be able to ask him what is wrong and how to fix it. Lastly, we divided the parts of our final report so we can start on that earlier rather than later.

Alex Krause SJSU ME 195a Full Scale Controls Team Individual Blog - Week of 9/12 A lot of progress has been made since the first project meeting. I have been conducting research of my own on other control systems used around the world to better understand the terminology and process of controlling large transportation systems. I have also been reading through past reports to broaden my knowledge of what has already been made, what has worked, and what needs to be fixed or added. With every class, I feel more comfortable talking about the project and more comfortable interacting with other teams. The controls team was able to get together and decided that our first priority is to get any type of motor to start testing and experimenting with. While we can use the hub motor that Ron provided, I am unsure right now if it is a good test subject for us.
